Ben Hecht (1894-1964) began his career at the age of sixteen as an errand boy for the Chicago Daily News, for which he worked for years first as a local reporter, then as an editor, and for which he went to Berlin in 1918 as a correspondent. After his return, Hecht initially wrote short stories, novels and plays before his rise to become one of the most prominent screenwriters. He worked for Sternberg, Hawks, Billy Wilder, and Alfred Hitchcock, and was known as the 'Shakesepeare of Hollywood'.
