The Rivers of France; From Drawings by J.M.W. Turner, R.A.
London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green & Longman, [1837]. First Edition. 4to. 8.5 x 10.75 in. Original purple ribbed cloth, elaborately decorated in gilt, a.e.g. Illustrated with 62 plates (complete with tissue guards), exquisitely engraved by John Cousen, Robert Brandard, Thomas Jeavons, Robert Wallis, James Tibbits Willmore, et al., after drawings by English Romantic painter William Turner, Royal Academy of Arts; including engraved title page & tissue-guarded frontispiece. Text in French & English. Very good. One-inch closed tear from lower joint of crown. Spine heavily sunfaded, with some fading to extremities and rather light edgewear & soiling. Moderate dampstaining (presumably from a River in France) to top-right quadrant of most of textblock, partly affecting plates; surprisingly few traces of occasional foxing throughout. Binding remains square & tight, text bright & unmarked.
A less common cloth variant, lacking the 1837 publication date on title page, yet retaining the long imprint 'Longman, Rees, Orme, Browne, Green & Longman' on engraved title page. Owen Rees retired from the bookselling trade in 1837.
