[viii], 894 pp. + [69] (index), [1 blank] pp. The fourth edition of Brás Viegas' excellent 'Exegetic Commentary on the Apocalypse of John the Apostle' (first published in 1601), edited and revised, and supplemented with an index of biblical passages and an index of significant words. Prefaced by a four-page dedication to Cardinal Odoardo Farnese, patron of the arts; a note to the reader by Fernando Rebello, doctor of theology & chancellor at the Univ. of Évora; and an epigram by Jesuit Emmanuel Pimenta. Rebound in dark brown roan leather, titled in gilt on upper cover. Ornamented throughout with black & white vignettes, tailpieces, decorative drop capitals, etc. Text in Latin. Near fine. Pages trimmed rather close to text. Binding square & tight, text crisp and unmarked.

Brás Viegas (1553-1599) was a Portuguese Jesuit, teacher of theology & professor sacred scripture. His exegesis on the Book of Revelation was notable in the 17th-century and went through several editions. An fine old work of jesuit exegesis preserved in a rather plain binding.
